What is an underground pet fence system?

An underground pet fence system is a containment system that keeps your pet within a pre-determined area like your back yard.

An underground pet fence system is made out of three components. The first major component is the special collar that your pet wears. The collar transmits an electronic FM signal to keep your dog contained within the pre-determined area set with wires. The wire is the second component of an underground pet fence system and sets the boundary. The last component is the transmitter. The transmitter emits the signal to the collar when the pet gets too close to the boundary.

How does the underground pet fence system work?

The pet you are trying to contain wears the special collar. Whenever the pet gets too close to boundary a warning beep is transmitted. If the pet disregards the warning beep and continues forward he will then receive an electronic stimulation.

The object is to teach the dog that when he hears the warning beep that he better not go any further. Below you will find a 4 step process to training your pet to use an underground pet fence system.

*Note: Use a leash for the first 3 steps.

    Step one : Introduction

  • The first thing the pet needs to be introduced to is the warning flags, as soon as the pet sees the warning flag he needs to retreat.
  • The second thing the pet needs to be introduced to is the warning beep. The warning beep should make the pet stop in their tracks.
  • Step Two : Correction

  • The next step to training your pet to be fully trained in an underground pet fence system is to introduce the correction he will receive if he ignores the warning beep. The trainer must instill in the dogs head that if he does not retreat once the warning beep is sounded that he will receive a correction.
  • Step 3: Temptations

  • When the dog understands that the warning beep means trouble. Then it is time to really test him.
  • The object of this step is to see if your pet truly understands what will happen if he gets to close to the boundary. Stand on the opposite side of the boundary line with something that your pet enjoys. For example, his favorite toy or treat. If he does not cross the boundary then you are one step close to having a fully trained pet. If he does, repeat the first 3 steps over.
  • Step 4: Final Step

  • The final step is to take the leash of the pet to see how he responds. Closely observe your pet from a distance to see if he really understands what happens if he crosses over the boundary line.
  • The first couple time you do this, only do it for a few hours. Over time increase the time of unsupervised time off the leash until you feel comfortable enough to leave him for a full day.
